On August 8, 2010, our BEEautiful daughter, Henley Hazel Romine, was diagnosed with Stage IV Neuroblastoma, a malignant tumor that developed in her adrenal gland and spread to other areas of her body. Neuroblastoma is a rare childhood cancer that requires intensive treatment. Needless to say, we faced an incredible challenge. Like a roller coaster, our journey was filled with ups and downs; yet, Henley’s strength, determination, and resiliency were unrelenting. Henley’s positive attitude gave us the strength and courage to face each and every day, but we were also incredibly blessed with much love and support from God, our family, and our amazing BEE Backers. We know that God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. Each day, we prayed that God would bless Henley with strength when she was in pain, grant her patience when she was confused, and help her hear His voice in her dreams and heart. We understand that our Lord is a healer of spirits and of bodies and gained much comfort through our unwavering faith. With hearts full of love, we enjoyed all the days that our Brave Bee smiled and giggled, and we lived our lives to the fullest throughout her courageous battle.
During Henley’s battle, we were blessed to learn some of life’s most valuable lessons. We learned that cancer is going from one day to another; it is endless treatments; it is nausea; it is learning a whole new medical language; it is traveling across the country to get the best treatment; it is testing our limits; it is becoming closer to family and friends; it is taking family excursions; it is a builder of strength; it is not sweating the small stuff and being glad for simple pleasures; it is seeing the world; it is BEElieving in miracles; it is knowing anything is possible; it is not giving up hope; and it is staying in touch with God.
After three years of continuous treatment, Henley gracefully earned her angel wings on July 19, 2013. We understand that her body was tired and was ready to join our Savior in Heaven. We face each day with heavy hearts, as we miss her dearly. Yet, we find comfort in knowing we will see her again!
Henley, you are our angel, our darling, our star…and our love will find you, wherever you are!
In her four and a half short years, Henley lived a full, joyful life. Though many of our days were spent in the oncology clinic and inpatient at the hospital, we made a point to enjoy every minute she was feeling well. As a family, we love the outdoors and exploring new places, so we knew we had to find time to do so any chance we were given! Henley’s care stretched from New York City, NY, to Grand Rapids, MI, and back home to Indianapolis, IN. Luckily, each one of these cities offers much entertainment and fun! While in New York, we did it all…Central Park, Time Square, Top of the Rock, Rockefeller Plaza during Christmas, the Statue of Liberty, shows, dinners out, shopping, and even trips to the Jersey Shore BEEaches. Michigan offered us the opportunity to visit Henley’s favorite place…the BEEach! After visiting several beaches and cute beach towns, we found our perfect getaway at Oval BEEach. Joyfully, we filled our days with building sand castles, searching for shells, and chasing the waves. Back home in Indiana, we visited the Indianapolis Zoo, the Children’s Museum, attended concerts, sporting events, plays, enjoyed shopping, and so much more.
Henley loved life and all it had to offer. She was full of spunk and personality. As a family, we were able to create so many priceless memories and had so many unforgettable experiences by taking little day trips. After Henley’s passing, we realize even more just how close to our heart we hold these memories. How lucky we are to have been able to take advantage of each day with our Brave Bee. It is now our mission to provide other families with these everlasting memories. Through our foundation, we hope to give children fighting for their lives an experience they will cherish forever.
